The intangibles play a major role in accomplishing many of the agency goals and create value which may not be visible but is inherent in everything that the agency does for, and offers to, the community.
Allowing for ongoing professional development, even in times of budget cuts, is a cheap and easy way to foster morale, goodwill, and ultimately sustain a high level of service.
Innovation should be rewarded and can take the form of money, recognition or a combination of the two. The front line staff tend to have some of the best recommendations and those ideas should be heard and put into place to see the viability, or feasibility, of the plan before shunting it.
The PNR Analysis
Parks and Recreation agencies are typically saddled with the terrible mantra of “we have always done it that way." This is where bold leadership needs to step up and take action to instill a path of continuous improvement through staff and community engagement in order to take the agency to a level of relevancy and credibility.
Doing so will allow for better succession planning and creating a parks and recreation story that is heard by staff, community, and the elected.
Creating viable and achievable plans is another way to build a team by enabling each layer of the organization to participate in your agency’s Strategic Plan, Master Plan, Comprehensive Plan and all other plans that will play a role in telling your story.
